The Enchanting International Balloon Fiesta: A Sky Full of Wonders
The International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is an annual celebration that transforms the sky into a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes. This event, which dates back to 1972, has grown from a humble gathering of 13 balloons to become the largest ballooning event in the world. Each October, Albuquerque welcomes hundreds of pilots and tens of thousands of visitors who come to witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of a sky filled with hot air balloons.
This fiesta holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike, as it not only celebrates the art of ballooning but also pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of New Mexico. The early morning ascensions, known as Mass Ascensions, are one of the most breathtaking sights. Stopped for a coffee and caught the Ascension. The sky was filled with a myriad of balloons, each uniquely designed, creating an almost surreal experience against the backdrop of the Sandia Mountains.

The magic doesn’t end when the sun sets. Twilight Balloon Glows are another enchanting feature of the festival where balloons are tethered and illuminated from within, creating a mesmerizing glow. This spectacle, combined with the cool evening breeze, makes for an unforgettable evening. Check out the balloon glow below from the 2021 fiesta.
Another essential activity is the Dawn Patrol. This pre-dawn event showcases a select group of hot air balloons that launch in the early morning light, providing a unique and enchanting view as they gently light up and float against the dark sky gradually brightening with the rising sun. The Dawn Patrol is particularly favored for its serene atmosphere and the opportunity to witness the intricate process of balloon inflation and takeoff in a more intimate setting. During our visit, we did not get to see the Dawn Patrol, but we did have a wonderful morning burn and flyover. Check out the video.
In addition to these main events, the Balloon Fiesta Park itself offers a range of attractions, from interactive exhibits at the Balloon Discovery Center to vendor booths offering local crafts, foods, and souvenirs. For those seeking a more immersive experience, the opportunity for a balloon ride offers a breathtaking perspective over Albuquerque and its surroundings.

Practical advice for attendees includes arriving early to beat the crowds and secure the best spots for viewing. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, so the earlier you can get there, the better. It’s also recommended to check the weather forecast and dress in layers, as temperatures can vary significantly from pre-dawn to midday. Additionally, staying hydrated and wearing comfortable shoes can greatly enhance the festival experience, allowing visitors to fully enjoy all the activities this renowned event has to offer.

There are lots of options for lodging, camping and glamping, if that’s your thing. While driving around the area we came across a lot full of Volkswagen van campers. The owner of this one used hundreds of bottles of sparkly purple nail polish to create a unique look. This place definitely falls into the category of hidden gems. The owners were kind enough to allow us to come in and take a look around the different vans and some of them were really quirky and fun. It was like a little Volkswagen village. If you are looking for a place to stay in the area, Click Here, but I would suggest making your plans as early as possible as the accommodations fill up quickly.
One must do thing at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is to go down to the field to see the balloons. When we were there, the weather did not allow the balloons to fly, but the operators filled up the balloons and the spectators were treated to a fantastic experience. It is almost overwhelming and is a sensory overload at the least. Take advantage of the opportunity to see some of the balloons up close and have a chat with the pilots. The ones we visited were very kind and answered all of our questions about where they were from, what their balloons’ story was and how they came to be invited to the fiesta. Below is one of my favorites from the festival

For photography enthusiasts, capturing the perfect shot requires a blend of timing and positioning. Early morning and late evening light provide the best conditions, and a wide-angle lens can help capture the grandeur of the mass ascension. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned attendee, the International Balloon Fiesta offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in an iconic spectacle that is as culturally enriching as it is visually stunning. Enjoy!
